In a secluded corner of any newsroom, it is often pinned to a bulletin board, perhaps peeking out from behind the coffee machine: the Code of Ethics of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ).

With fewer than a thousand words, it lends itself to being displayed in its entirety on a poster.

Nevertheless, those wordsstructured around four fundamental journalistic principlescarry such significance, according to Dan Axelrod, that they could ultimately rescue our democracy.

No obstante, esas palabrasarticuladas en torno a cuatro principios periodísticos fundamentalesrevisten tal trascendencia, según sostiene Dan Axelrod, que podrían llegar a rescatar nuestra democracia.

"I'll say it without beating around the bush," says Axelrod, chair of the SPJ Ethics Committee and a former business reporter for Gannett.

"This is the way to protect democracy.

This is about protecting society.

Esto es para proteger a la sociedad.

Without journalists, my God, society would be lost."

Axelrod not only refers to the existence of the code but also emphasizes the urgent need for its periodic updating.

This undertaking proves extremely arduous, as it demands roughly a year of dedication and countless hours of deliberations and observations, both in the virtual and in-person realms.

However, given that the media landscape changes almost daily and new technologies emerge, the SPJ has decided that the time has comefor the first time in twelve years, and only the sixth occasion in the code's century-long history.

The severity of the corporate situation prompted the committee and other media ethics experts to travel to Indianapolis in June, following numerous virtual meetings.

It seems it was hardly the most relaxing way to spend a weekend.

"Passions, without a doubt, were stirred up," asserts Axelrod.

"Well, there were no fistfights," jokes his colleague, Chris Roberts, vice-chair of the committee and a journalism professor at the University of Alabama.

He explains that there was "a great deal of goldsmith-like work with words."

The outcome: no white smoke is in sight, although a draft code of 967 words has indeed been forged, 73 more than the current text.

But why subject it to an update in the first place?

The primary reason by no means an unexpected one lies in the dizzying emergence of artificial intelligence.

"We were considering artificial intelligence and its use, as well as its occasional misuse by news organizations," says Roberts, "as they grapple with this new technology that saves them money, but also causes many problems if not employed effectively and ethically."

Another topic of debate concerns the very concept of "professional journalists".

In recent years, there has been a notable increase in independent journalists, the so-called "creator journalists".

The SPJ maintains that these individuals should also be governed by a code that guides their work.

(Such a code, as is customary, constitutes a voluntary guide and lacks binding force.)

A primary objective is to address an existential crisis affecting the journalistic field: the growing loss of public trust in the media.

"We are talking about a world that no longer trusts us as it once did," says Roberts.

"We are referring to politicians and other figures who are determined to attack journalism for daring to point out their flaws.

Meanwhile, the business of journalism has changed so much financially that a third of journalists no longer work for a traditional news organization."

"All those things and many more are compelling reasons to reconsider the matter," he asserts, "and to remind people that there are standards that should be non-negotiable, regardless of whether one calls oneself a journalist or the type of platform one works for."

The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ), which has approximately 4,000 members nationwide, was founded in 1909.

In 1926 it adopted its first code of ethics, subsequently established an ethics committee in 1948, and has revised that code on five occasions, the most recent being in 2014.

The four fundamental and immutable principles: "Seek the truth and report it".

"Minimize harm".

"Minimizar el daño".

"Act independently".

"Actuar de forma independiente".

"Be accountable and transparent".

"Ser responsable y transparente".

Nevertheless, its evolution has been considerably more profound.

A report attached to the draft highlights that traditional roles within newsrooms are undergoing a gradual decline as the sector contracts.

At the same time, it argues, there has been a significant surge in citizen journalists, freelance professionals, digital influencers, and commentators.

The document refers to a Pew study revealing that, in 2023, a full third of journalists worked as freelancers or self-employed individuals.

It also refers to the dwindling presence of media outlets that act as watchdogs, as well as to "individuals, organizations, and private investors without journalistic training, who buy or open media outlets, affecting news coverage, influencing editorial decisions, and pushing personal agendas".

The Inter-American Press Association asserts that the rapid growth in the adoption of generative artificial intelligence and other emerging technologiesboth in journalism and in other fieldsraises ethical questions.

Thus, a new line reads: "Remember that speed, technology, or the medium do not excuse inaccuracy or injustice. Journalists are ethically responsible for their work, regardless of the tools and technologies used."

In other words: the responsibility falls on the journalist, irrespective of what AI might claim.

"We do not wish for the pretext of technology to be used to justify the inability to produce ethical and transparent products," states Roberts.

However, the proposed draftwhich will be voted on in October by the broader organization following an ongoing comment perioddoes not explicitly mention artificial intelligence, referring only to tools and technologies, in order to remain relevant as technology evolves.

It also addresses other issues such as verification, disinformation, crime reporting, fake images, and more.

A notable addition and one that sparked widespread debate is this line: "Be vigilant and courageous in holding those in power accountable. Counter the unjust marginalization of those with less power."

What is truly revealing lies in what replaces it.

The original text read: "Giving a voice to those who do not have one."

This formulation was deemed problematic, as it presupposed that certain groups lacked a voice.

Committee member Eric Deggans points out: "It's not that they lack a voice. It's that, all too often, mainstream media fail to pay attention to them or are not even aware of their existence."

"What we wanted to address," says Deggans, NPR's general critic and professor of media ethics at Washington and Lee University, "was the idea that there are groups that may be marginalized from news coverage... and (journalists) should make an effort to include them when relevant, particularly when it enhances the accuracy of the story."

Given the evolving industrial landscape, a more general question arises: can a single code be universally applicable?

And will it even receive due recognition?

¿Y gozará, siquiera, del debido reconocimiento?

"We shouldn't shy away from it," responds the current president of the SPJ, Chris Vaccaro, "just because the industry is changing or the notion of who is a journalist is changing."

Vaccaro is confident that the code, which has been translated into multiple languages, will be followed by many.

That bulletin board in the newsroom, he says, is now the whole world.

"Undoubtedly, we are not going to operate under the premise that no one will use it, or that it concerns no one, or that journalism has undergone such a drastic transformation that it lacks relevance," Vaccaro states.

"It is indeed relevant."

" es relevante".

Deggans notes that he teaches two ethics courses, and in both the SPJ code is examined.

However, beyond the training of young journalists, this code serves other crucial functions.

"If you operate in a country that has endured an authoritarian regime for a long time or lacks a well-established tradition of a free press, how do you figure out how it works? You turn to the SPJ code, don't you?"

Deggans advocates for a greater number of active journalists to undergo a thorough review of the code.

And others as well: "I would like some media owners to examine the code, because all too often they coerce their employees into engaging in unethical practices, leaving the employee in the predicament of having to reconcile their journalistic integrity with the demands of the employer."
