On Thursday, singer Cassie had to read out loud some personal messages she sent to her ex-boyfriend, Sean “Diddy” Combs, in court. These messages talked about times when she seemed to want to be part of group sex with drugs, which she had said before made her feel very bad.
Combs' lawyers tried to show the jury that Cassie wanted to be part of his life and his way of having relationships. Combs says he is not guilty of the serious charges about sex and illegal business. His lawyers say that even if he was sometimes violent, he did not do anything illegal.
The police say he used his important job in music to make Cassie and other women have long times with sex workers, called "freak-offs," sometimes for days. Combs says everyone agreed to the sex. He is also accused of using his friends and workers to help with illegal things, like driving people for prostitution, which is a big part of the charges.
The fourth day in court in New York was about messages between Combs and Cassie, which were both loving and shocking. The lawyer for Combs, Anna Estevao, read what Combs wrote. Cassie also read her own messages about what she wanted. Cassie will continue telling her story on Friday.
Combs, who is 55 years old, has been in prison since September. If he is found guilty, he could be in prison for 15 years or more.
Cassie, whose real name is Casandra Ventura, said she felt she had to join in these activities to please Combs. But Estevao showed messages where Cassie seemed happy about the experiences and even wanted to do one herself.
In August 2009, Combs asked her when she wanted to meet again. She said she was always ready for fun. Two days later, Cassie sent a message and he replied that he was excited. She answered that she wanted it to be wild.
Later that year, she also told Combs she was not happy with their relationship and wanted more than just sex.
Estevao mentioned a text message from July 2013 where Cassie told Combs she wished they had done something fun before he left, using the letters "FO."
In a message from 2017, Cassie told Combs she loved their times together when they both wanted it. In court on Thursday, Cassie said that "loving times together" were just words at that time.
Cassie said that the people in the jury didn't understand everything about the messages. She said, "We didn't talk about a lot of things."
Cassie's lawyer showed her some texts she sent before she met Combs in a Los Angeles hotel in 2016. Video showed Combs kicking and pulling her in the hall. Cassie said she wanted to finish the meeting quickly to keep Combs happy and avoid problems before a movie event she had soon.
Estevao said that Cassie was angry about Combs and that she felt jealous when he paid attention to other women. Cassie said Combs didn't want her to see other people, but he could do what he wanted.
Cassie said that after being with Combs for some years, she wanted to be more important to him, but he didn't allow it. They were together from 2007 until 2018.
The lawyer didn't argue much when asking questions. Estevao spoke kindly, and sometimes she and Cassie seemed like friends talking.
Cassie, who is 38 and pregnant with her third child, seemed strong while giving her testimony. She cried a few times when the lawyers asked her questions before, but mostly she stayed calm and spoke clearly about difficult things.
While the messages were read out loud, Combs seemed calm. He was sitting back in his chair with his hands together and legs crossed. The room was full of his family, friends, reporters, and people who supported Cassie, including her husband.
During a break, Combs stood at the table with his lawyers. He had some sticky notes and a pen in his hands. He looked at the reporters and said, “How are you doing?” Combs’ daughters were not in the courtroom that day.
The jurors watched the messages on the screens in front of them. One woman shook her head when she saw one message. A man looked closely at the screen and touched his chin. Some jurors looked curious and looked at Cassie or wrote notes.
The police have been looking at Combs wanting Cassie to have sex with other people. But Cassie said that sometimes she watched Combs have sex with other women. She said Combs told her it was like a "swingers" thing.
Estevao asked Cassie if she thought strange parties had anything to do with that way of living.
Cassie said, "In a sexual way," and then added, "They are very different."
Cassie said on Tuesday that Combs really wanted to watch people in a way where "he was in charge of everything." These private things happened in dark hotel rooms, not like Combs' big parties with famous people.
She said that sometimes she needed medicine through a needle to feel better after meeting him. Later, she started using strong painkillers because they made her "feel nothing" afterwards, and she became addicted to them.
Cassie's words changed when she was asked more questions. Before, she talked about the violence and shame she felt during her relationship with Combs. She said these bad things happened many times.
Cassie said in court on Wednesday that Combs sexually assaulted her after they broke up in 2018. She also said he controlled her by threatening to share private videos of her.
In 2023, she said Combs hurt her physically and sexually for years and took him to court. They quickly agreed to settle for $20 million, which Cassie revealed on Wednesday. After that, many other women made similar claims. The police also started looking into Combs, which led to the trial happening this month.
