A judge told the lawyer for Sean "Diddy" Combs to be careful about what he says in public because the trial has started. The judge said it was not right for the lawyer to call the people who are trying the case "a group of white women" on a show.
On Tuesday, Judge Arun Subramanian and lawyer Mark Geragos had a meeting. A paper written about this meeting showed what they said.
The judge said on Wednesday that he will finish choosing the jury on Friday. The trial will start on Monday.
The trial in New York is happening after the 55-year-old music promoter said he was not guilty of serious charges. He was arrested in September and has been in prison since then.
On Tuesday, the lawyers for the state asked the judge to tell Geragos to follow the rules about what lawyers can say about the case while it is happening. They said Geragos had not officially told the court he was working for the person on trial, but someone who helps choose the jury and the other defense lawyers seemed to talk to him.
Later, the judge asked if Geragos was helping Combs.
Geragos said he works for the singer's mother and has also worked for Combs. He talks to Combs a lot. The lawyer's daughter, Teny Geragos, is a main person on Combs' legal team.
When Geragos started to talk about the police speaking about the case before the trial, the judge stopped him and said: "Let's just talk honestly."
The judge said that Geragos talked about the lawyers for the other side. He called them "a six-pack of white women" on a show he does.
Then Subramanian asked Geragos if he knew it was wrong to say that because he was a lawyer.
Geragos said: "When a black man is in court and feels people are against him, I think that is something you see."
The judge said his point again: "I think this is silly. I think saying 'a six-pack of white women' about the lawyers in this case is very bad."
Subramanian told Geragos that he would watch and listen to him. Geragos went to most of the jury selection.
"Now I will listen to your podcast," the judge said.
If you subscribe, I think it's a good idea, Geragos said quickly.
Before the trial, Combs' lawyers said that angry words from government agents and Combs being famous caused many different complaints from people nobody knew. These complaints were not true, and some were very strange.
They said many lawsuits were started against Combs last year. They think the stories about these lawsuits have caused a crazy media situation. They believe this situation might stop Mr. Combs from getting a fair trial.
For three days, the judge has been asking possible jury members questions one by one to see if they can be fair. Combs watched from his seat as they were asked questions.
On Friday, the lawyers will choose the jury. They can remove some people from the list without saying why. This usually takes about an hour. Then, they will have the final jury of 12 people and some extra people.
People say Combs ran his businesses like a criminal group. He used workers and other people to help him do bad things, like taking people, starting fires, paying people for things, and selling people for sex.
Prosecutors say Combs used his fame and money to make young women do sexual things they didn't want to do. They say he made women have sex with men at parties while he watched and filmed.
Combs' lawyers say the police want to control sex between adults who agree.
