A judge told the lawyer for Sean "Diddy" Combs to be more careful about what he says in public. The judge said it was wrong for the lawyer to call the prosecutors "a group of six white women" on a podcast, especially since the trial has started.
A written record of a meeting in the judge's room on Tuesday showed what Judge Arun Subramanian and lawyer Mark Geragos talked about.
Meanwhile, the judge said on Wednesday that he will finish choosing the jury on Friday. The trial will start on Monday.
The court case in New York comes after the 55-year-old music promoter said he was not guilty of serious crimes after his arrest in September. He has stayed in prison without the chance to pay bail since then.
On Tuesday, the prosecutors asked the judge to tell Geragos that he must follow the local rules. These rules limit what lawyers can say about the case while the trial is happening. The prosecutors said that Geragos had not officially told the court he was representing the person during the trial. However, it seemed that someone who advises on juries and the defense lawyers were getting advice from him.
Later that day, the judge asked in a meeting if Geragos, who has represented famous people like Michael Jackson and the Menendez brothers, was helping Combs at all.
Geragos said he represents the entertainer's mother and has represented Combs, and they talk often. The lawyer's daughter, Teny Geragos, is an important member of Combs' legal team.
When Geragos seemed like he was going to criticize the prosecutors about the news before the trial, the judge stopped him and said, "Let's just talk honestly."
The judge said that Geragos called the prosecution team 'a six-pack of white women' on his podcast.
Subramanian then asked Geragos if he knew that saying that was not appropriate for someone who is a lawyer.
Geragos said: "I think when a black man is on trial and the client feels he is being targeted, it's something to notice."
The judge repeated his point, saying: “I think this is silly. I think calling the prosecution in this case a ‘six-pack of white women’ is wrong.”
Subramanian told Geragos, who was there for most of the jury selection, that he would be watching and listening to him.
"I'll be listening to your podcast now," the judge told him.
“If you subscribe, I agree,” Geragos replied quickly.
Before the trial, Combs' lawyers claimed that "false statements" from government agents and Combs' fame led to "many accusations from people who were not named, and these accusations were completely untrue or even ridiculous."
They said the many lawsuits against Combs and the claims in them have caused a lot of media attention. They think this could stop Mr. Combs from getting a fair trial if it keeps going, and maybe it already has.
For the last three days, the judge has been asking possible jurors questions one by one to see who can be fair and not take sides. Combs has watched from his seat at the defense table as jurors were asked questions.
On Friday, lawyers from both sides can remove some people from the jury. They usually don't have to explain why. This process usually takes an hour or less and creates the final jury of 12 people plus alternates.
Combs is accused of running his businesses like a criminal group, using employees and others to help him commit various crimes, including kidnapping, setting fires, bribing people, and sex trafficking.
Prosecutors say Combs used his fame and money in the hip-hop world to make young women do sexual acts they didn't want to do. This included parties where women were forced to have sex with men while Combs filmed them.
Combs' lawyers say prosecutors are trying to control sexual activity that people agree to.
