On Monday, the European Union imposed sanctions on nearly 1,600 Russian individuals and companies linked to Russia's arms industry, targeting in particular those suspected of having taken part in the manufacture of components for drones and missiles.

In the largest single list of sanctions since the Kremlin launched a full-scale war against Ukraine nearly five years ago, the EU also targeted 77 individuals accused of organising, working in, or leading "fraudulent elections" in occupied parts of Ukraine.

Announcing the sanctions, the EU's foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, stated that more than half of them "target the production chain of the ballistic missiles that Russia uses to kill Ukrainian civilians every day".

"This is not the moment to ease the pressure on Moscow, but rather to increase it," she asserted.

The EU noted that the companies appear on a list drawn up by the Russian government itself "which identifies them as belonging to the Russian military-industrial complex and, therefore, entitles them to receive subsidies".

The EU maintains that the officials who run the companies "support Russia's military-industrial complex".

It stated that the sanctions are aimed at "mid-tier suppliers that represent the 'core' of the Russian military industry".

The components they supply range from electronics, communication equipment, radar and navigation systems, satellite and missile systems, to explosives and ammunition.

The measure brings the total number of Russian officials and "entities" sanctioned by the EU to more than 4,500, including President Vladimir Putin, oligarchs suspected of backing him, and dozens of legislators, as well as banks and the shadow fleet that transports oil illicitly.
