U.S. stocks are rebounding on Friday, recovering much of their losses for the week after oil prices eased off their recent surge.
An inflation update across the United States that came close to economists' expectations, even if prices are still rising too quickly for everyone's liking, also helped calm the market.
The S&P 500 advanced 1%, positioning itself to snap a four-day losing streak—its lengthiest since June.
By 12:45 p.m. Eastern time, the Dow Jones Industrial Average had gained 575 points, or 1.1%, while the Nasdaq composite stood 1.1% higher.
They benefited from a pullback in oil prices, which had surged to their highest levels since May amid the ongoing war with Iran.
The price for a barrel of Brent crude, the international benchmark, fell 2.3% to $105.12 after approaching $110 overnight.
That alleviated some of the pressure on inflation, which remains stubbornly elevated.
A report on Friday revealed that U.S. consumers had to contend with prices for gasoline, food and other living expenses that were 3.4% higher last month than a year earlier.
U.S. equities surged following a moderation in oil prices during early trading.
Although still elevated, the figure aligned closely with economists' forecasts and with what Wall Street had anticipated.
The data further reinforced traders' expectations that the Federal Reserve will feel compelled to raise its benchmark interest rate at next week's meeting.
Such moves are the typical way the Fed tries to rein in high inflation, and they work by filtering through the bond market, making it more expensive for everyone to borrow money, slowing the economy and hopefully removing fuel for further inflation.
The growing expectation of an imminent rate hike pushed the yield on the two-year Treasury, which moves with guesses about upcoming Fed action, to 4.61% from 4.56% late Thursday.
Longer-term yields, however, actually eased.
That could indicate that bond market investors see forthcoming rate hikes by the Fed as helping to keep inflation under control over the longer term.
The yield on the 10-year Treasury dipped to 4.95% from 4.95% late Thursday.
Economists say rate hikes could ease concerns about the Fed's commitment to controlling inflation.
Worries had grown earlier in the summer about its credibility and whether it would do what was needed to bring inflation down, even if that causes short-term economic pain.
Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh has remained resolute in refraining from offering any indication of the direction in which the Fed might steer interest rates, although he did allay certain investor apprehensions during a speech late last month.
President Donald Trump, in the meantime, has been advocating for interest rates to decline rather than rise.
"Symbolism can trump substance, even when it comes to monetary policy," according to Brian Jacobsen, chief economic strategist at Annex Wealth Management.
This convergence occurs at a juncture when confidence among Americans continues to deteriorate.
A preliminary report from the University of Michigan on Friday indicated that U.S. consumer sentiment is declining, with reductions observed among both Democrats and Republicans.
Their expectations for inflation in the coming year surged to 4.6% from 4% last month.
That marks the highest reading since June, and it is disconcerting for the Fed and for economists, as it can set off a vicious cycle of behavior that exacerbates inflation.
On Wall Street, Kroger climbed 2.5% after the grocer disclosed a quarterly profit that surpassed analysts' expectations.
The company also reaffirmed its full-year profit guidance, despite having revised downward its forecast for a key underlying measure of revenue growth.
ACV Auctions, whose digital marketplace connects wholesale buyers and sellers of vehicles, soared 44.5% after Copart said it would pay $10.50 in cash for each of the company’s shares.
Copart, whose online vehicle auctions sold more than 4 million units in the last year, rose 1.2%.
Oracle's early jump faded as trading went on, after the tech giant reported stronger profit and revenue for the latest quarter than analysts expected.
After initially leaping 8.5%, its stock swung between modest gains and losses and was most recently down 1.3%.
Stocks closely linked to the artificial-intelligence industry broadly turned volatile this summer amid concerns that the AI frenzy may have pushed prices excessively high.
Overseas stock markets saw European indexes climb as oil prices subsided.
London's FTSE 100 gained 0.4% following a report indicating that the U.K. economy had performed more robustly in July than economists had anticipated.
Asian stock markets exhibited pronounced weakness, with Japan’s Nikkei 225 declining 1.9% and South Korea’s Kospi dropping 1.8%.
