The Department of Homeland Security said something.
More than 100,000 people from Ukraine and Sudan can stay in the United States.
They do not have to leave now.
Their right to stay was going to end on Monday.
Temporary Protected Status was going to end on Oct. 19.
This was for about 101,000 Ukrainians and 1,800 Sudanese.
DHS said it will make an announcement later.
It said this in a written statement.
Until then, the Ukrainians and Sudanese keep their protection.
The department did not say how long they can stay.
It did not say when a final decision will come.
It did not answer a question about work permits.
TPS usually lets people work while their protection is active.
This is another case for the Trump administration.
The administration lets people with temporary status stay.
But it does not say for how long.
The administration already ended TPS for more than 1 million people.
These people are from 13 countries.
The countries include Venezuela, Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua, Afghanistan and Syria.
About a month ago, it kept protection for nearly 200,000 Salvadorans.
Their TPS was going to end on Sept. 9.
The administration made the same promise then.
It said a decision would come at the right time.
Activists and a bipartisan group of lawmakers are worried.
They are worried about the deadline for Ukrainians.
They say it is not safe for them to go home.
The war with Russia is still going on.
Ukraine first got TPS in April 2022.
This was after Russia's full-scale invasion.
The Biden administration extended the designation.
The last time was in January 2025.
This added 18 months of protection, through October 2026.
Sudan's TPS program started in 1997.
Later administrations extended it again and again.
This is because of armed conflict and political instability.
The decision comes two weeks before the Nov. 3 midterm elections.
Congress created TPS in 1990.
The goal was to stop deportations to countries with natural disasters or civil strife.
TPS lets people already in the country stay and work.
It lasts for renewable periods.
But it does not give them a pathway to permanent residency.
Federal rules say something.
TPS is automatically extended for six months.
This happens if the secretary does not decide at least 60 days before the designation ends.
Myal Greene is president and CEO of World Relief.
He said he is grateful for an extension.
The extension is temporary.
It is for TPS holders from Ukraine and Sudan.
He encouraged the administration and Congress to think about longer-term relief.
Krish O'Mara Vignarajah is president and CEO of Global Refuge.
She said Ukraine and Sudan are not safe.
She said they meet the legal conditions for TPS to be extended.
She said it is not safe for these families to go home.
