Iran has launched missiles at U.S. targets in Jordan, according to Iranian state-run media, in the wake of the latest American strikes.

This is the most recent round of reciprocal strikes, coming after the U.S. military reported that it had destroyed five Iranian crude oil tankers in response to two assaults on an American warship carried out by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard over the preceding two days.

U.S. Central Command, when queried about the strikes on the Jordanian airbase, stated that it had no information to provide.

Central Command reported that the tankers destroyed in the assault—the Kivik, Charminar, Horizon 1, and the Riesco—were situated in the Gulf of Oman.

Additionally, U.S. forces eliminated the vessel Derya, which had been positioned in proximity to Kharg Island within the Strait of Hormuz.

Central Command reported that the crews of the five vessels were instructed to evacuate their ships prior to the assaults.

The strikes come a mere three days after U.S. forces destroyed three Iranian oil tankers, following an attempt by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards to attack a U.S. aircraft carrier and destroyer.

Iranian state television also reported the U.S. strikes, asserting that American forces targeted at least three Iranian oil tankers in the vicinity of the southern port of Jask and near Kharg Island in the Persian Gulf.

It further stated that the vessels' crews had been evacuated.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the United States will not permit Iran's assaults to go unaddressed.

"Iran continues to try to strike U.S. naval ships.

And for every time they do that or attempt it, they will lose tankers.

And I think you'll see that again today," Rubio told reporters on Tuesday when asked about the latest attacks in Iran during his trip to Colombia.

Danny Citrinowicz, an Iran specialist at Israel’s Institute for National Security Studies, cautioned that such reciprocal strikes are liable to provoke further retaliation and inflict additional damage on the global economy.

"There is no kinetic solution to the Strait of Hormuz problem," he said on social media.

"Any attempt to impose one only brings Washington and Tehran closer to an escalation that may become increasingly difficult to control."

An Iranian state TV correspondent in Jask reported that an Iranian tanker had been hit off the coast of Yekbeni, while a second blast was audible in the vicinity, the origin and exact location of which remained unclear at the time.

State television subsequently reported that U.S. forces had struck a second tanker in the vicinity of waters off Jask, adding that the crews of both vessels were being evacuated by lifeboat toward the Jask coastline.

Separately, state television reported that another Iranian tanker had come under attack in the anchorage area of Kharg Island.

It stated that the crew had been safely evacuated shortly after the strike.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Navy issued a warning on Tuesday to crews of oil tankers near ports in Kuwait and Bahrain, telling them to leave their vessels immediately, as the ships could be targeted in retaliation for U.S. attacks on Iranian tankers.

It also accused Kuwait and Bahrain of hosting U.S. forces and assisting in those attacks.

On Saturday, the U.S. military announced it had struck three Iranian oil tankers after Navy warships were targeted with ballistic missiles, warning that it would, "if necessary, destroy Iran's limited and exposed oil fleet."

Iran later said it planned to declare a new "exclusion zone" near the Strait of Hormuz, aimed at vessels intending to transit.

The latest strikes form part of a dual economic and military strategy pursued by President Donald Trump as he endeavours to conclude a conflict with Tehran that has persisted for over six months.

On Tuesday, the Trump administration imposed additional sanctions on more parts of Iran's aviation industry, targeting over two dozen commercial and private airlines as well as foreign cargo providers, in a renewed effort to cut off Tehran's remaining trade partners.

Both Washington and Tehran are competing for control over the Strait of Hormuz, a vital passage for roughly one-fifth of the world's oil before the war.

Rising energy prices are creating political challenges for Trump and the Republicans as the November midterm elections near.

On Tuesday, Brent crude, the international benchmark, briefly reached as high as $99.46 a barrel.

A U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports has weakened the economy by restricting oil exports, while American forces have assisted a small number of ships in navigating the Strait of Hormuz near Oman.

Tehran demands that vessels use a route it selects through the strait, which was previously considered an international waterway before the conflict.
