In Nepal, rescue teams recovered a Chinese man and a woman in separate operations on Saturday, ten days after catastrophic flooding devastated the country, while crews persisted in their search for thousands of individuals still unaccounted for.

The man was extricated from a hydropower tunnel, as confirmed by a social media statement from the prime minister’s office, raising the tally to three workers retrieved alive from the Trishuli hydropower project.

Two Nepalese workers had been rescued the preceding Friday.

Nepal's army stated that a joint team of its soldiers and South Korean disaster experts pulled the man out of a 225-meter (about 740-foot) tunnel, and he was then given a health check.

Video showed him being airlifted by helicopter, with an army medic looking after him during the flight.

A photograph released by Chinese state broadcaster CCTV depicted two rescue workers carrying the man, identified as Lu Haitao, out of the tunnel.

CCTV footage captured Lu recounting to an officer how he had shouted repeatedly upon spotting the rescue crews’ lights, yet his cries went unheard.

“When they rescued me today, when they shone the light before my eyes, I could scarcely believe it,” he said.

According to CCTV, Lu was conveyed to a medical facility, where his condition was reported as stable.

Rescue operations have increasingly centered on 12 hydropower projects across Nepal, where authorities report that about 900 workers are missing and roughly 500 are believed to be trapped in various tunnels.

Specialized rescue teams from India, China, South Korea, and the United States have been searching through debris, damaged structures, and tunnels at these sites, hoping to find survivors.

In flood-hit Nuwakot town, a woman was pulled alive from a house, Nepal’s army spokesperson confirmed on Saturday.

Officials stated that she had been airlifted to Kathmandu for medical care.

Images released by Nepal’s army depicted rescuers discovering the woman, caked in mud, within the damaged dwelling.

They provided her with bottled water prior to extracting her to safety, enveloped in a gray blanket.

According to Nepal’s disaster management agency, at least 1,300 people perished in the Aug. 26 floods, which were likely triggered by a glacial collapse, while over 5,000 individuals remain unaccounted for.
