In separate operations on Saturday, Nepalese rescue teams extracted a Chinese man and a woman from the aftermath of the catastrophic flooding that struck the country ten days prior, while search efforts persisted for the thousands still unaccounted for.
The individual was extricated from a hydropower tunnel, as per a communiqué disseminated via the prime minister’s office’s social media platform, thereby elevating the tally to three labourers retrieved alive from the Trishuli hydropower undertaking.
Two Nepalese workers had been extracted on the preceding Friday.
The Nepalese military has reported that a coordinated rescue operation, comprising its own personnel alongside South Korean disaster-management specialists, successfully extracted the individual from a subterranean passage measuring 225 meters—approximately 740 feet—in depth, whereupon he was subjected to a comprehensive medical evaluation.
Visual documentation depicted his aerial evacuation via helicopter, during which a military medic rendered continuous assessment throughout the flight.
A photograph disseminated by China's state broadcaster CCTV depicted two rescue personnel conveying the individual, identified as Lu Haitao, from the tunnel's confines.
CCTV footage captured audio of Lu conversing with an officer, during which he recounted how he had shouted repeatedly upon every sighting of the rescue crews’ lights, yet his cries remained inaudible to them.
“Upon their rescue of me today, when the beam was cast upon my eyes, I found it scarcely conceivable,” he remarked.
According to CCTV's account, Lu was transported to a medical institution and remained in a clinically stable condition.
Authorities have reported that rescue operations are now being progressively redirected toward a dozen hydropower installations across Nepal, where approximately 900 personnel remain unaccounted for and an estimated 500 are presumed to be entrapped within subterranean tunnel networks.
Contingents of specialized search-and-rescue teams dispatched from India, China, South Korea, and the United States have been systematically combing through rubble, structurally compromised edifices, and the aforementioned tunnels at these sites, endeavoring to locate any conceivable survivors.
In flood-ravaged Nuwakot, a woman was extricated alive from beneath the rubble of a collapsed dwelling, Nepal’s army spokesperson confirmed on Saturday, adding that she had been airlifted to Kathmandu for medical attention.
Photographs disseminated by the Nepalese military depicted rescue personnel extricating the woman, who was encrusted with mud, from the dilapidated structure.
Following the administration of bottled water, she was conveyed to safety, swathed in a grey blanket.
According to Nepal’s disaster management agency, no fewer than 1,300 individuals perished in the floods of August 26, which are presumed to have been precipitated by a glacial collapse, whilst upwards of 5,000 remain unaccounted for.
