The Nepalese side has been very different.

Officials there have regularly updated lists of the dead and missing.

Journalists have documented the disaster, and grieving families have been made visible.

Nepal has also allowed both domestic and foreign reporters to visit disaster sites.

China’s information control is especially tight in Tibet, where communications are heavily monitored.

Chinese journalists have been told not to interview family members of the dead or missing, according to Human Rights Watch.

Some relatives have spoken through independent channels outside China, such as exiled media or social media accounts, hoping to find information about their loved ones.
