Thailand started to limit who could cross its land border on Monday, stopping tourists from going into Cambodia. This happened because the two countries are in a disagreement about their border and are taking actions against each other.
The relationship between the two countries has gotten worse after a fight on May 28 in a disputed area, where a Cambodian soldier was killed. Even though both sides have agreed to calm down the situation, they continue to do things or threaten to do things that keep the tension high.
Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra said on Monday that Thailand will increase checks at its land borders and stop tourists from leaving. She explained that only students, people who need medical care, and those buying important goods would be allowed to enter or leave Thailand.
She said the rules were meant to stop people going to Cambodia's profitable casinos, but it looked like all tourists would be stopped.
On Monday, the Thai army stated that they had put new rules in place at all land borders with Cambodia in five provinces. They are now only allowing people with essential needs to cross.
Because of a disagreement about their border, Cambodia has stopped using some Thai internet services. They have also blocked electricity and fuel from Thailand. Before this, Cambodia got 30% of its gasoline and other fuel from Thailand.
Paetongtarn also said on Monday that Thailand will think about stopping exports that could help scam operations in Cambodia. They will also work with other countries and international groups to stop cybercrime in Southeast Asia.
Earlier this year, Thailand took steps to stop online scams in Myanmar. They did this by cutting off electricity, internet, and gas to the border towns where these scams were happening.
A UN report in April said that Cambodia is a main place for online scam operations. In these operations, workers trick people using fake romantic stories, false investment chances, and illegal gambling.
Paetongtarn has been criticized for her relaxed attitude towards Cambodia, especially by right-wing nationalists who have always been against her father, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
Last week, a phone call between Paetongtarn and Hun Sen, who is the Cambodian Senate President and former prime minister, was leaked. This made many people angry and led to calls for Paetongtarn to resign.
Critics said she tried to please Hun Sen, who was a long-time friend of her father. They also said she made Thailand look weak by calling a Thai army commander in charge of the disputed border area "an opponent." Because of this, several nationalist groups are planning a protest this week to ask for Paetongtarn's resignation.
