South Koreans are voting for a new president in an early election. This election is happening because the previous president, Yoon Suk Yeol, was removed from office. He was removed after he briefly put the country under military rule, which led to him being charged with rebellion. The liberal candidate, Lee Jae-myung, is expected to win because many people are unhappy with the conservative party. This election is taking place when the country is very divided, which could make the new president's job difficult. The winner will immediately begin a five-year term. They will face challenges such as a slowing economy, America's 'first' policies under Trump, and nuclear threats from North Korea. Before the election, surveys suggested that Lee would probably win. He is known for criticizing the conservative government and wanting a more active foreign policy. However, his critics think he is a dangerous populist who breaks promises.
