An explosion at a chemical factory in Weifang, a city in eastern China, has killed at least five people and injured nineteen, with six people still missing. The blast happened at a factory owned by Gaomi Youdao Chemical Co., which produces pesticides and medical chemicals. The explosion broke windows in nearby buildings and sent a large cloud of smoke into the air. Students at a nearby school reported a strange smell after the explosion. More than 230 workers went to the scene, and a team was sent to check for possible pollution. This event happened shortly after a national meeting to improve safety in the chemical industry, which shows that there are still safety problems in Chinese workplaces. Last year, the Gaomi Youdao factory was praised for managing risks well, as it had found and fixed over 800 safety issues.
