A federal immigration officer is accused of shooting a Venezuelan man.
The officer appeared before a judge in Minnesota on Thursday.
His name is Christian Castro.
He works for Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Judge Paul Scoggin gave him bond at the hearing.
Castro wore an orange jumpsuit.
He sat behind a glass enclosure.
His attorney is Daniel Gerdts.
Gerdts did not want to talk after the hearing.
Castro was arrested on Wednesday.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension arrested him.
He faces state charges of assault and false reporting.
The charges are about a shooting in January.
The man who was shot is Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis.
Judge Scoggin set bail at $400,000 with no conditions.
He also set bail at $200,000 with conditions.
One condition is that Castro must not fight extradition if he is released.
Castro also faces federal charges for the same shooting.
The shooting happened during a federal immigration crackdown in the Minneapolis area.
Prosecutors say he told investigators a false story.
He said someone attacked him with a broom and a shovel.
Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty spoke about it.
She said Castro "invented a story to justify shooting through a front door into a house with multiple people in it."
His next hearing is Friday.
It is in federal court in St. Paul.
The charges are about making false statements to investigators.
His federal defense attorneys say he plans to plead not guilty.
Minnesota charged Castro months before his federal indictment.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott refused last month to sign an extradition warrant.
This is the first Justice Department prosecution of a federal officer.
It is for actions during this year's Operation Metro Surge.
