New Hampshire voters are choosing candidates for Congress, governor, and the state Legislature on Tuesday.
The races are unusually competitive because U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen decided not to seek reelection.
Two of the eight Republicans hoping to replace Shaheen are former U.S. senators she defeated: John E. Sununu and Scott Brown.
Sununu lost to Shaheen in 2008 and has been out of politics for 17 years.
He said he is focused on housing, healthcare, energy costs, and holding Congress accountable.
Brown previously represented Massachusetts and lost to Shaheen in 2014.
He said he is the only truly independent candidate who can vote with New Hampshire’s interests at heart.
The Democratic race for Shaheen’s seat includes U.S. Rep. Chris Pappas, who is leaving his House seat after four terms.
Pappas has raised far more money than his opponents and led in polls, though he recently lost some ground to scientist Karishma Manzur.
One voter said she chose Manzur because Pappas accepted money from super PACs and voted “present” on a measure to restrict weapons sales to Israel.
Shaheen’s daughter, Stefany Shaheen, is among seven Democrats seeking Pappas’ House seat.
Her main rival is Maura Sullivan, a former Marine and Iraq War veteran who lost to Pappas in 2018.
In the 2nd District, Democratic Rep. Maggie Goodlander faces a challenge from state lawmaker Paige Beachemin.
Republicans dominate state government, and Gov. Kelly Ayotte faces two little-known opponents in her primary.
Winners will have just eight weeks before the Nov. 3 election, though future state primaries will move to June.
