Labor Day began in the late 19th century as a day to honor workers.
The first U.S. celebration was in New York City on Sept. 5, 1882, when about 10,000 workers marched.
President Grover Cleveland signed a law in 1894 making the first Monday of September a legal holiday.
Most major retailers and grocery stores will be open on Labor Day, many with sales.
Costco will be closed.
Government offices, post offices, courts, and schools are closed.
U.S. stock markets and banks are closed.
Standard FedEx and UPS pickup and delivery will not run, though some critical services remain.
Millions of Americans plan to travel for the last big summer weekend.
AAA says flights to top domestic spots are nearly 20% costlier than last year.
Hotel prices have also risen.
The average U.S. gas price is just under $4.10 a gallon, up 90 cents from a year ago.
Cruises from U.S. ports are about 4% cheaper.
AAA advises travelers to check the weather and inspect tires, battery, and fluid levels before driving.
It also suggests packing an emergency kit with water, snacks, a flashlight, and jumper cables.
