The last person who was missing after a boat overturned on Lake Tahoe has been found. This means that eight people died in total after a strong storm hit the area over the weekend.

Ten people were on a 27-foot (8-meter) Chris-Craft boat when it overturned on Saturday afternoon. This happened near D.L. Bliss State Park on the southwest side of Lake Tahoe, as a storm created large waves.

Two people were rescued immediately and taken to a hospital, but their condition is not known. Six bodies were found later on Saturday, and a seventh body was discovered on Sunday evening, according to the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office. Divers searched a part of Lake Tahoe and found the last body on Monday afternoon.

Sergeant Kyle Parker said that the names of the victims won't be shared until their families are told.

In recent years, some people have died by accident in the lake, for example, by drowning. However, serious boating accidents with many deaths are rare. The South Lake Tahoe Police Department told KCRA-TV in 2022 that about six people die in the lake every summer. But in 2021, a record fifteen people died. The police department could not give updated numbers right away.

The thunderstorm was much stronger than even weather experts expected. Matthew Chyba, a meteorologist from the National Weather Service in Reno, Nevada, said they thought it would rain, but not a powerful storm like the one that hit the south side of the lake around 3 p.m. The wind blew faster than 35 mph (56 kph), and the waves became taller than 8 feet (2.5 meters).

Chyba said they didn't expect it to be so strong.

He said that temperatures in the area were much colder than usual for this time of year, which might have made the air unstable.

Chyba said the eight-foot waves on Lake Tahoe were "quite significant," and they were making the lake very rough.

Lake Tahoe is a well-known spot for summer fun, attracting people who enjoy boating, kayaking, and paddleboarding. This beautiful, but very cold, lake sits on the border between California and Nevada and is one of the deepest in the United States, only beaten by Oregon's Crater Lake.

Officials have not given any details about the people on the boat that sank, and they haven't said if the boat was rented or owned.

The storm on Saturday dissipated within approximately two hours.

Brittany Glick was on a rented pontoon boat with seven other people, celebrating a friend's bachelorette party on Saturday, when the wind started to get stronger and the waves became bigger. Glick said on Monday that the day had started sunny, but suddenly the temperature dropped and it was hard to see.

She said it felt like a tsunami was just starting, and she had never experienced anything similar.

After about an hour of sailing on increasingly rough water, which got the passengers very wet, the boat returned to the dock, and then it started to hail.

"Seeing the overturned boats really shocked us," Glick explained. "And being soaked through, we were incredibly cold, shivering uncontrollably. Our feet were numb, and our toes started turning blue. It was probably one of the most frightening experiences I've had in my life. The storm appeared so suddenly; it was truly terrifying."
