For the first time, some parts of Alaska will have a heat advisory. This is a new term the National Weather Service is using instead of "special weather statements." They want to show how serious and dangerous the weather can be, not just say that temperatures are very high. The first advisory was for Fairbanks, where temperatures were expected to go above 85 degrees Fahrenheit, which is unusual for June. This new term is not about climate change. Instead, it recognizes that hot weather affects Alaska, especially in places without air conditioning. Right now, only Juneau and Fairbanks can use this advisory system, but they plan to use it in Anchorage too. However, temperatures in Anchorage have not yet been high enough for a heat advisory.
