On Monday, they found the last person who was missing from a boat. The boat turned over on Lake Tahoe in California during a big storm at the weekend. Now, eight people have died.
On Saturday afternoon, a boat with ten people turned over near D.L. Bliss State Park. This happened because a storm caused big waves. The boat was 27 feet (8 meters) long. The U.S. Coast Guard said this.
Two people were saved quickly and went to a hospital, but we don't know how they are. Six dead people were found on Saturday and another one on Sunday evening, the police said. Divers looked in the lake and found the last dead person on Monday afternoon.
Kyle Parker said they will not say the names of the people who died until their families know.
People have drowned in the lake in recent years. Accidents with boats that cause many deaths are not common. In 2022, the South Lake Tahoe Police said that about six people die in the lake each summer. But in 2021, 15 people died, which was a lot. The police don't have the newest numbers right now.
The storm was very strong, much more than weather experts thought. They thought it would rain a little, but not such a big storm with strong winds near the lake at 3 p.m. Matthew Chyba, a weather expert, said the wind was faster than 56 kph, and the waves were higher than 2.5 meters.
"We didn't think it would be this strong," Chyba said.
He said it was much colder than usual in the area, and this might have made the air not stable.
Chyba said that big waves on Tahoe are "pretty important." He said, "They were really shaking the lake."
Lake Tahoe is a well-liked place to visit in the summer for people who like boating, kayaking, and paddleboarding. This beautiful lake is in both California and Nevada, and it's very deep and cold. Only Crater Lake in Oregon is deeper.
The officials have not given any information about the people on the boat that sank. They also haven't said if the boat was rented or if someone owned it.
The storm that happened on Saturday was over in about two hours.
Brittany Glick was on a rented boat with seven friends, celebrating a bachelorette party on Saturday. The weather changed quickly; the wind got stronger, and the waves grew bigger. The day had started sunny, but then the temperature dropped suddenly, and it became difficult to see, Glick explained on Monday.
"It felt like a big wave was coming. I have never felt anything like that before," she said.
After about an hour, the boat returned to the dock. The water became very rough, so the passengers got wet. Then, it started to hail.
"It was scary to see the boats turned over," Glick said. "We were wet and very cold. We were shaking a lot. Our feet felt numb, and our toes were turning blue. It was one of the scariest times in my life. The storm came very fast. It was really frightening."
A video showed boats at a marina hitting each other because of strong winds.
