Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a builder from Maryland, said he did not smuggle people in a court in Tennessee. His lawyers said the charges are a way to hide that he was wrongly sent to El Salvador in March. This case started after the Supreme Court said he must come back, because many people wanted it. Abrego Garcia's lawyers said the people who spoke for the government were not honest. They said these people only helped to get special help with their immigration papers. The charges came from when police stopped his car in Tennessee in 2022. Abrego Garcia was driving nine people, and the police thought he was smuggling them. But, they let him go with just a warning. Before the court meeting, government lawyers said Abrego Garcia was a danger to the community and might run away. They said he sold drugs and guns, and hurt women he drove. Because of these charges, Ben Schrader, who was the head of criminal cases for the government, left his job.
