A federal appeals court seems likely to let former President Trump keep control of California National Guard troops, who were sent to Los Angeles after protests about immigration raids. This decision might overturn a lower court's order for Trump to give control of the guard back to Governor Newsom, who said Trump went beyond his authority. This case is important because it is the first time since 1965 that a president has used a state's National Guard without the governor's permission. Also, it could greatly affect how much power a president has to send soldiers into U.S. cities. The appeals judges, two chosen by Trump and one by Biden, suggested that presidents have a lot of freedom under the federal law in question. However, they did not agree with the Justice Department's lawyer, who argued that courts could not look into Trump's decision. A ruling from the group of judges is expected soon.
