For the first time, some parts of Alaska, like Fairbanks, will have a heat advisory. This new term from the National Weather Service replaces "special weather statements" to better explain how serious and dangerous the weather is, not just to show record-breaking temperatures. Fairbanks was the first place to get this advisory, with temperatures expected to go above 85 degrees Fahrenheit, which is unusual for June. This change in terms is not about climate change, but it shows that hot weather does affect Alaska, especially where there is no air conditioning. Right now, this advisory system is only used in Juneau and Fairbanks, but they plan to use it in Anchorage too. However, temperatures in Anchorage have not yet been high enough for a heat advisory to be issued.
