A federal appeals court seems likely to let former President Donald Trump keep control of California National Guard troops, who were sent to Los Angeles after protests about immigration raids. This is happening even though a lower court told Trump to give control of the guard back to Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom. Newsom disagreed with sending the troops, saying Trump had gone too far with his power. The result of this case could greatly affect how much power a president has to send soldiers into U.S. cities. This is important because it's the first time since 1965 that a president has used a state National Guard without the governor's permission. The judges, two chosen by Trump and one by Biden, suggested that presidents have a lot of freedom under the federal law in question. However, they did not agree with the Justice Department lawyer's argument that courts could not look at Trump's decision. A decision from the group of judges is expected soon.
