For the first time, some parts of Alaska will be under a heat advisory, a new term approved by the National Weather Service to replace "special weather statements." This change aims to better communicate how serious and dangerous the weather is, rather than just indicating unusually high temperatures. The first advisory was for Fairbanks, where temperatures were expected to go above 85 degrees Fahrenheit, which is unusual for June. This change in terms doesn't mean it's directly related to climate change, but it recognizes that hot weather does affect Alaska, especially in places without air conditioning. This advisory system is currently only allowed in Juneau and Fairbanks, but there are plans to expand it to Anchorage. Even with the warm weather, temperatures in Anchorage have not yet reached the level needed for a heat advisory to be issued.
