The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has temporarily stopped a federal judge's order for President Trump to give control of National Guard troops back to California. This happened after the troops were sent to Los Angeles because of protests about immigration raids. Before this, U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer had decided the deployment was illegal, saying it went against the Tenth Amendment and was more than Trump's legal power allowed. California Governor Gavin Newsom had praised this earlier decision. However, the White House said Breyer's order was "unprecedented" and an "abuse of power." The ruling only applied to the National Guard, not to the Marines who were also being sent out. Newsom had sued to stop the Guard's deployment, arguing it would make tensions worse and encourage civil unrest. The deployment was done under Title 10, which allows the president to call the National Guard into federal service in certain situations.
