For the first time, parts of Alaska, including Fairbanks, are under a heat advisory. This new term, recently allowed by the National Weather Service, replaces "special weather statements" to better explain how serious and dangerous the weather is, not just to indicate record-breaking temperatures. Fairbanks is expecting temperatures above 85 degrees Fahrenheit, which is unusual for June. This change in terminology acknowledges that hot weather affects Alaska, especially in places without air conditioning, but it is not directly related to climate change. Currently, this advisory system is only used in Juneau and Fairbanks, but there are plans to expand it to Anchorage, even though Anchorage's temperatures have not yet reached the level needed for an advisory.
