Khaby Lame, a very popular TikTok star with millions of followers, has left the U.S. after immigration officers in Las Vegas stopped him because they believed he stayed longer than his visa allowed.
Khaby Lame, an influencer from Senegal and Italy, was stopped at Harry Reid International Airport on Friday. However, a spokesperson for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said he was allowed to leave the country and was not deported.
Lame arrived in the U.S. on April 30 and stayed longer than his visa allowed, according to an ICE spokesperson. The Associated Press tried to get a comment from him on Tuesday by sending an email to the address on his Instagram account. He has not yet spoken publicly about being detained.
He was detained and chose to leave the U.S. during President Donald Trump's increasing efforts to control immigration. For example, raids in Los Angeles caused several days of protests against ICE, as the president was trying to find out the limits of his power.
Lame was allowed to leave the U.S. voluntarily. This is helpful because it means people who have to leave the country can avoid having a deportation on their official record. If they have a deportation on their record, they might not be able to return to the U.S. for up to ten years.
The 25-year-old became famous around the world during the pandemic. He posted videos where he reacted to complicated "life hacks" without speaking. He now has over 162 million followers on TikTok.
The influencer was born in Senegal and moved to Italy as a baby with his working-class parents. He is now an Italian citizen. He quickly became famous online and signed a multi-year agreement with the designer brand Hugo Boss in 2022. In January, he was made a UNICEF goodwill ambassador.
Last month, he participated in the Met Gala in New York City, just days after his arrival in the U.S.
