On Monday, the body of the last person missing from a boat that overturned on Lake Tahoe in California was found. Eight people died after the boat capsized during a sudden and strong thunderstorm over the weekend.

A 27-foot Chris-Craft boat with ten people on board overturned on Saturday afternoon. This happened near D.L. Bliss State Park, which is on the southwest side of the lake. A sudden storm caused big waves, making the boat flip over.

Two people were rescued right away and taken to a hospital, but their condition is not known. Six bodies were found later on Saturday, and a seventh body was found on Sunday evening. Divers looked in a part of Lake Tahoe and found the last body on Monday afternoon, according to the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office.

Sergeant Kyle Parker said that the names of the victims will not be shared until their families have been told.

There have been some accidental deaths, like drownings, in the lake recently, but serious boating accidents with many deaths are rare. In 2022, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department told KCRA-TV that about six people die in the lake each summer. However, in 2021, a record fifteen people died. The department could not give new numbers right away.

The thunderstorm was much stronger than even weather experts expected. Matthew Chyba, a weather forecaster, said they thought there would be some rain, but not the powerful storm that hit the south side of the lake around 3 p.m. Winds reached over 56 kph, and waves became more than 2.5 meters high.

We didn't expect it to be so strong, Chyba said.

He said the temperatures in the area were much colder than usual for this time of year, which might have made the air unstable.

Chyba said that eight-foot waves on Lake Tahoe were "pretty significant," and they were making the lake very unsteady.

Lake Tahoe is a well-known place for summer fun, attracting boaters, kayakers, and paddleboarders. This beautiful, but very cold, lake sits on the border between California and Nevada, and it's one of the deepest in the United States, only surpassed by Oregon’s Crater Lake.

Officials haven't shared any details about the group on the boat that sank, or whether they rented or owned the boat.

The storm on Saturday dissipated within approximately two hours.

Brittany Glick was on a rented pontoon boat with seven friends, celebrating a bachelorette party on Saturday, when the weather suddenly changed. The wind got stronger and the waves became much bigger. Glick said on Monday that even though the day started sunny, the temperature quickly dropped, and it was hard to see.

It felt like a tsunami was just beginning. I had never experienced anything like it before, she explained.

After an hour battling rougher and rougher waves that left everyone wet, the boat headed back to the dock, only for it to start hailing.

Glick said, "Seeing the boats turned over really shocked us. We were completely wet and very cold, shaking a lot. Our feet felt numb, and our toes started to turn blue. It was probably one of the most frightening moments I've had in my life. The storm came very fast; it was truly scary."

KCRA-TV got a video that showed boats at a nearby marina hitting each other because of strong winds.
