A judge in Massachusetts has stopped President Trump's plan to change how U.S. elections work. This decision supports a group of Democratic state lawyers who argued that his actions were against the Constitution. Trump's order, which he issued in March, aimed to make people show proof of citizenship when registering to vote. It also stated that only mailed votes received by Election Day would be counted, and that states would only get federal election money if they followed this new deadline. The White House defended the order, saying it would ensure "free, fair, and honest elections." However, Judge Denise J. Casper ruled that the states would likely win their legal challenge. She explained that the Constitution does not give the President special powers over elections. The judge's decision also blocked a part of the order that required states to reject any mail-in or absentee votes that arrived after Election Day. This is the second time Trump's election order has faced legal problems, as a judge in Washington D.C. had already stopped parts of it.
