Mary Lou Retton, the well-known American gymnast, was arrested in her home state of West Virginia for driving under the influence, a minor offense. The arrest happened on May 17th after police received reports of a Porsche being driven unsafely. When officers stopped Retton, they noticed she smelled of alcohol, her speech was unclear, and there was an open wine bottle in the car. Retton, who is 57, failed a sobriety test and refused both a roadside breath test and a blood test. She was later released after paying a $1,500 bond. Her lawyer, Edmund J. Rollo, has not yet commented. This incident comes after news in 2023 that Retton was recovering from a rare and serious type of pneumonia that required her to be in intensive care because of very low oxygen levels.
