For the first time, parts of Alaska, including Fairbanks, will be under a heat advisory. This new term, allowed by the National Weather Service, replaces "special weather statements." The goal is to better explain how serious and dangerous the weather is, not just to show record-breaking temperatures. In Fairbanks, temperatures were expected to go above 85 degrees Fahrenheit, which is unusual for June. This change in terms is not about climate change. Instead, it recognizes that hot weather affects Alaska, especially where there is no air conditioning. Currently, this advisory system is only used in Juneau and Fairbanks, but there are plans to use it in Anchorage too. However, temperatures in Anchorage have not yet been high enough for a heat advisory to be issued.
