A federal appeals court seems likely to let former President Donald Trump keep control of California National Guard troops, who were sent to Los Angeles after protests about immigration raids. This would overturn a lower court's decision that ordered Trump to give control of the guard back to Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom. Governor Newsom had disagreed with the deployment, saying Trump had gone beyond his authority. The result of this case could greatly affect a president's power to send soldiers into U.S. cities. It is important because it is the first time since 1965 that a president has used a state National Guard without the governor's permission. The judges, two chosen by Trump and one by Biden, suggested that presidents have a lot of freedom under the federal law in question. However, they did not agree with the Justice Department lawyer's argument that courts could not look at Trump's decision. A ruling from the group of judges is expected soon.
