On Thursday, the Supreme Court appeared likely to uphold the block on President Donald Trump's rules about birthright citizenship, while also seeking ways to limit the impact of nationwide court orders.
It wasn't clear exactly how the decision would be made, but most judges worried about the possible effects if the Trump administration was allowed, even for a short time, to refuse citizenship to children born in the US to parents living there without permission.
The judges listened to arguments regarding the Trump administration's urgent appeals against rulings that have blocked the citizenship limits nationwide.
Nationwide injunctions have become a key way to control Trump's attempts to change the government, but they also increasingly annoy the Republican president and his supporters.
Since January, when Trump started his second term, judges have made 40 nationwide orders, according to Solicitor General D. John Sauer, who informed the court at the beginning of over two hours of discussion.
The administration has urgently asked the court to consider birthright citizenship, along with other immigration-related matters.
This type of legal case could be processed quickly and might have implications across the country.
However, when questioned by Justice Amy Coney Barrett and other judges, Sauer suggested that the Trump administration might disagree with such a legal case or possibly attempt to delay group actions.
It's unusual for the Supreme Court to hear arguments about emergency appeals; normally, the justices focus on the main issues of a case.
However, the government didn't request the court to consider the broader question at this time. If the court agrees with the government regarding nationwide injunctions, it remains uncertain how long differing rules about citizenship would affect children born in the U.S.
They expect to make a decision by the end of June.
