According to government officials, at least 10 people in the U.S. have become ill because of a listeria outbreak connected to ready-to-eat foods, and one company is choosing to recall some of its products.
US officials are looking into illnesses that might be linked to food from Fresh & Ready Foods in California. Ten people in California and Nevada got sick and had to go to the hospital.
The agency stated that the products were available for purchase in Arizona, California, Nevada, and Washington, at different places such as shops and food sellers, for example, hospitals, hotels, small shops, airports, and from airlines.
Symptoms of Listeria often appear within two weeks after eating infected food. Mild problems can involve fever, muscle pain, feeling sick, feeling tired, throwing up, and loose stools, while more serious signs might be a headache, a stiff neck, feeling confused, difficulty staying balanced, and fits.
Government officials said they started looking into the recent outbreak of illness last year, but they didn't have enough proof to find out where the infections came from. They said the investigation was started again in April when FDA inspectors found listeria in samples from Fresh & Ready Foods that was the same kind as the one causing the outbreak.
Fresh & Ready Foods announced in a press release that it quickly took steps to fix the problem, such as removing equipment.
The FDA found that six of the ten people who got sick were in the hospital before they got listeria. The FDA also learned that food from Fresh & Ready Foods was served in at least three of the hospitals where these patients were treated before.
The health protection agency said they took samples from sick people from December 2023 to September 2024.
Fresh & Ready decided to recall some products with "use by" dates between April 22 and May 19 of this year. These products are sold under the names Fresh & Ready Foods, City Point Market Fresh Food to Go, and Fresh Take Crave Away.
