On Thursday, the Supreme Court appeared likely to uphold the block on President Trump's limitations regarding citizenship acquired at birth, while also seeking methods to narrow the scope of nationwide court orders.
The exact details of the decision were unclear, but most of the court worried about the possible effects if the Trump administration could, even for a short time, deny citizenship to children of undocumented immigrants.
The judges listened to arguments in the Trump administration's urgent appeals about rulings from lower courts. These rulings had stopped the citizenship limits from being enforced nationwide.
Nationwide injunctions have become a key way to control Trump's attempts to change the government, but they are increasingly frustrating for the Republican president and his supporters.
Since January, when Trump started his second term, judges have made 40 nationwide orders, according to D. John Sauer, a top legal official, who told the court this at the beginning of a two-hour debate.
The administration has urgently asked the court to consider birthright citizenship, along with other immigration-related matters.
This type of legal action could be launched and processed swiftly, and might even have implications across the country.
However, when questioned by Justice Amy Coney Barrett and other judges, Sauer suggested that the Trump administration might actually disagree with the lawsuit or possibly attempt to delay group legal actions.
It's unusual for the Supreme Court to debate emergency appeals, as they typically focus on the core issues of a case.
The government didn't request the court to address the broader question at this time, and should the court agree with the government regarding nationwide injunctions, it remains uncertain how long differing regulations on citizenship would affect children born in the U.S.
They expect to make a decision by the end of June.
