In the U.S., at least 10 people are sick from a listeria outbreak linked to ready-to-eat foods. The company that made the food is voluntarily recalling some products, according to federal officials.
On Saturday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that government officials are investigating an illness connected to food made by Fresh & Ready Foods LLC in California. The FDA stated that ten people in California and Nevada became sick, and all of them had to go to the hospital.
The agency stated that the products were available for sale in Arizona, California, Nevada, and Washington. They were sold in different places like shops and food businesses, such as hospitals, hotels, small shops, airports, and on airplanes.
Usually, symptoms of Listeria start within two weeks after eating food that is infected. In less serious cases, people might have a fever, muscle pain, feel sick, feel tired, vomit, and have diarrhea. More serious symptoms can be a headache, a stiff neck, feeling confused, losing balance, and having fits.
Government officials said they started looking into the recent outbreak last year but didn't have enough proof to find where the infections came from. They said they started the investigation again in April when FDA investigators found listeria in samples from Fresh & Ready Foods that was the same type found in the outbreak.
Fresh & Ready Foods stated in a press release that it took immediate steps to fix the problem, including removing equipment.
The FDA found that six out of the 10 people who got sick had been in the hospital before they got listeria. The FDA found that food from Fresh & Ready Foods was served in at least three of the hospitals where the patients had been before.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said they took test samples from sick patients between December 2023 and September 2024.
Fresh & Ready chose to recall some products, which you can find by checking the 'use by' dates between April 22 and May 19 of this year. The affected brand names are Fresh & Ready Foods, City Point Market Fresh Food to Go, and Fresh Take Crave Away.
