On Thursday, the Supreme Court appeared likely to uphold the block on President Trump's restrictions regarding citizenship by birth, while also seeking methods to limit the scope of nationwide court orders.
While the exact decision remained uncertain, most judges worried about the possible effects if the Trump administration could deny citizenship, even temporarily, to children of undocumented immigrants born in the US.
The judges listened to arguments regarding the Trump administration's urgent appeals against rulings that have prevented the citizenship limits from being applied nationwide.
Nationwide injunctions have become a key way to control Trump's attempts to change the government, but they are also making the Republican president and his supporters increasingly annoyed.
Since January, when Trump's second term started, judges have made 40 nationwide injunctions, according to Solicitor General D. John Sauer, who spoke to the court at the beginning of over two hours of discussion.
The administration has urgently asked the court to deal with birthright citizenship, along with other immigration-related matters.
A case like this could be processed rapidly and might have nationwide implications.
However, when questioned by Justice Amy Coney Barrett and others, Sauer suggested that the Trump administration might resist such a legal challenge, or possibly attempt to delay class action lawsuits.
It's unusual for the Supreme Court to debate urgent appeals, as they typically focus on the main issues of a case.
However, the government didn't request the court to address the broader question at this time. If the court supports the government regarding nationwide injunctions, it remains uncertain how long these varying rules on citizenship would affect children born in the US.
They should decide by the end of June.
