Donald Trump has chosen Dr. Casey Means to be his nominee for surgeon general. Dr. Means is a doctor who now works as a wellness expert and has close connections to Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the Health and Human Services Secretary. Trump made this decision after he withdrew his first choice for this important health position.
Trump said on social media on Wednesday that Means is a strong supporter of the 'Make America Healthy Again' idea. He added that she will work to get rid of long-term illnesses and make Americans healthier and feel better.
"Her success in her studies and her work are truly excellent," Trump said. "Dr. Casey Means could be one of the best Surgeon Generals in the history of the United States."
Trump chose someone else instead of Janette Nesheiwat for the job, who had previously worked for Fox News. This was the second time a person Trump chose for a health job was not considered by the Senate. Nesheiwat was supposed to have a meeting with the Senate committee on Thursday to decide if she should get the job.
Means and her brother, Calley Means, who used to work to influence politicians, were important helpers for Kennedy's presidential campaign, which wasn't expected to win. They also helped him officially support Trump last summer. Means and her brother appeared with some of Trump’s biggest supporters, and well-known conservative commentators like Tucker Carlson and Joe Rogan said good things about them. Calley Means now advises the White House and often talks on TV about limiting help for poor people, removing fluoride from drinking water, and other things that Trump's supporters want.
Casey Means has no experience in government and stopped her training to be a surgeon because she felt unhappy with normal medicine. She began a health technology company called Levels, which helps people check their blood sugar and other health details. She also makes money by promoting health products like supplements, creams, and teas on her social media.
In interviews and articles, Means and her brother talk about many different reasons for the country's health problems. They say these include powerful food companies that have made Americans eat unhealthy foods, which means people need medicine every day from drug companies to control weight, diabetes, and other long-term illnesses.
Most health experts agree that the typical American diet, with lots of processed foods, contributes to obesity and related health problems. But Means also connects changes in diet and lifestyle to many other conditions such as infertility, Alzheimer’s, depression, and erectile dysfunction.
In a book she wrote with her brother in 2024, Means said that many long-term health problems treated by Western medicine happen because our modern way of life stresses our cells.
Means has mostly stayed away from Kennedy’s unpopular ideas about vaccines. But on her website, she has asked for more research into how safe they are. She also suggests making it easier for people to sue drug companies if they are harmed by vaccines. Since the late 1980s, a federal law has protected these companies from lawsuits. This was to encourage them to develop vaccines without worrying about expensive personal injury lawsuits.
She studied to be a surgeon at Stanford University, but she is now popular online because she criticizes the medical system and suggests natural foods and changes in how people live to help with obesity, diabetes, and other long-term health problems.
If Means becomes surgeon general, he would help promote Kennedy's big health plan. This plan wants to take out many additives and chemicals from American food. It also wants to stop conflicts of interest in government agencies and encourage healthier food in school lunches and other food programs.
Nesheiwat, who was Trump's first choice, is a medical director for a company in New York that provides urgent care. She often appears on Fox News to share her medical views. She strongly supports Trump and posts pictures of them together on social media. Nesheiwat is also related to Mike Waltz through marriage. He was a national security adviser before and has been put forward as a possible ambassador for Trump at the United Nations.
However, Laura Loomer, a strong supporter of Trump, had recently criticized her. Loomer had helped remove several people from the president’s National Security Council. A few days earlier, Loomer wrote on X that the surgeon general should not be someone who supports the COVID vaccine, got her job through family connections, is involved in a medical lawsuit, and did not study medicine in the US.
Last month, journalist Anthony Clark wrote that Nesheiwat got her medical degree from a different university than the one she said she attended. Because of this, the White House decided not to choose Nesheiwat for the position, according to someone who knows the situation.
Nesheiwat wrote on social media Wednesday that she was excited to keep supporting President Trump and work closely with Secretary Kennedy in a senior policy job to Make America Healthy Again! She also said that her main goal is still to make all Americans healthier and happier, and that goal hasn't changed.
The head doctor for the country is in charge of 6,000 health workers. He can give warnings about dangers to public health.
In March, the White House decided not to choose Dave Weldon to lead the Centers for Disease Control. This was because he had doubts about vaccines, and some important Republican senators were worried about this.
