President Donald Trump has chosen Dr. Casey Means to be the top doctor in the country, called the surgeon general. Dr. Means is a doctor who now focuses on health and wellness and is good friends with Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who is in charge of Health and Human Services. Trump chose her after changing his mind about the person he first wanted for this important job.

Trump wrote on social media that Means is very qualified for "Make America Healthy Again" and will work to end long-term illnesses and make Americans healthier and happier.

"Her success in school and her work throughout her life are truly amazing," Trump said. "Dr. Casey Means could become one of the best Surgeon Generals in the history of the United States."

By doing this, Trump decided not to consider Janette Nesheiwat for the job. She had previously written about medical topics for Fox News. This was at least the second person Trump had chosen for a health-related position who was later removed from the Senate's review process. Nesheiwat was planned to speak to the Senate committee about her appointment on Thursday.

Means and her brother, Calley Means, who was a lobbyist, were important advisers for Kennedy's presidential campaign that wasn't likely to win. They also helped him decide to support Trump last summer. They showed up with some of Trump's biggest supporters and were praised by conservative commentator Tucker Carlson and podcaster Joe Rogan. Calley Means is now a White House adviser and is often on TV to talk about putting limits on SNAP benefits, taking fluoride out of water, and other things on the MAHA plan.

Casey Means has never worked for the government and left her training program to become a surgeon because she no longer believed in traditional medicine. She started a technology company called Levels that allows people to follow their blood sugar and other health information. She also earns money from selling things like vitamins, skin products, and drinks that are advertised on her social media.

In interviews and articles, Means and her brother say that many things cause the nation's health problems. These include food companies that have made Americans eat unhealthy food. Because of this, Americans need daily medicine from drug companies to control weight problems, diabetes, and other long-term illnesses.

Most health experts agree that the American diet, with its many processed foods, helps cause obesity and related health problems. But Means thinks that changes in how we eat and live are linked to many other health issues, like infertility, Alzheimer's, depression, and erectile dysfunction.

In a book she wrote with her brother in 2024, Means said that many long-term health problems treated by Western medicine are caused by our lifestyle, which damages our cells.

Means has mostly avoided Kennedy’s unpopular and disproven ideas about vaccines. But on her website, she has asked for more research into how safe they are. She also suggests making it simpler for people to take legal action against drug companies if vaccines cause harm. Since the late 1980s, a US law has protected these companies from legal responsibility. This was done to help them create vaccines without the risk of expensive personal injury lawsuits.

She studied to be a surgeon at Stanford University. But she is now popular online because she speaks against the usual medical system and suggests healthy food and lifestyle changes to help people with being overweight, diabetes, and other long-term sicknesses.

If Means is made surgeon general, he would be responsible for helping to promote Kennedy's big MAHA plan. This plan wants to take out thousands of extra things and chemicals from US food, get rid of conflicts of interest in federal agencies, and encourage healthier food in school lunches and other food programs.

Nesheiwat, who was Trump's first choice, is a medical director for an urgent care company in New York. She often appears on Fox News to share her medical knowledge and ideas. She is a strong supporter of Trump and puts pictures of them together on social media. Nesheiwat is also the sister-in-law of Mike Waltz, who was formerly Trump's national security adviser. Waltz has been suggested as Trump's ambassador to the United Nations.

However, she was recently criticized by Laura Loomer, a strong supporter of Trump who helped remove several people from the president's National Security Council. Loomer wrote on X earlier this week that the surgeon general should not be someone who supports the COVID vaccine, got the job because of family connections, is involved in a case about medical mistakes, and did not study medicine in the US.

Last month, journalist Anthony Clark reported that Nesheiwat got her medical degree from a different university than she said. The White House stopped Nesheiwat's nomination because they were not sure if she would be approved. This information came from someone who knew why but did not want to be named.

Nesheiwat wrote online on Wednesday: "I want to keep helping President Trump and work closely with Secretary Kennedy in an important policy job to make America healthy again! My main goal is still to make the health and lives of all Americans better, and that goal has not changed."

The Surgeon General is seen as the nation's doctor. They are in charge of 6,000 members of the U.S. Public Health Service Corps. They can also give official warnings about dangers to public health.

In March, the White House decided not to choose Dave Weldon, a former Republican representative from Florida, to lead the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He had doubts about vaccines, which worried important Republican senators. He left after the White House told him he would not have enough support to be approved.
