Carnegie Mellon University announced Wednesday that hedge fund CEO Ken Griffin is donating $3 billion.
Most of the money will fund a new campus in Miami focused on societal challenges.
The university said it is the largest single gift ever to a U.S. university.
Griffin’s gift includes $2 billion for a 35-acre campus in Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood, just north of downtown.
The campus is expected to enroll around 3,500 undergraduate, master’s and doctoral students.
Construction is scheduled to begin next year.
Instead of academic majors, it will focus on “grand challenge areas.”
These include human health, national security, energy and climate resilience, and advanced manufacturing.
The remaining money will be split evenly between two things.
One is the Pittsburgh campus’s computer science program, which will be renamed after Griffin.
The other is unspecified projects on the main campus.
Carnegie Mellon President Farnam Jahanian said AI demands that the university rethink how it educates students, conducts research and partners with others.
Griffin is a GOP megadonor who founded Citadel, and he owns a waterfront home in Miami.
He said bringing Carnegie Mellon to Miami places the city at the heart of humanistic and scientific advancement.
He is joining the university’s Board of Trustees.
