Carnegie Mellon University made an announcement on Wednesday.
Hedge fund CEO Ken Griffin is giving $3 billion to the school.
Most of the money will pay for a new campus in Miami.
This campus will focus on problems in society.
The university said it is the largest single gift ever to a U.S. university.
Griffin's gift includes $2 billion for a 35-acre campus in Miami's Wynwood neighborhood.
This area is just north of downtown.
The campus should have around 3,500 students.
These will be undergraduate, master's and doctoral students.
Building work is planned to start next year.
The campus will not use academic majors.
Instead, it will focus on "grand challenge areas."
These include human health, national security, energy and climate resilience, and advanced manufacturing.
The rest of the money will be split evenly.
Half will go to the computer science program at the Pittsburgh campus.
This program will be renamed after Griffin.
The other half will go to other projects on the main campus.
These projects are not yet named.
Carnegie Mellon President Farnam Jahanian said AI forces the university to rethink how it teaches students.
It must also rethink how it does research and works with partners.
Griffin is a major donor to the Republican Party.
He started the company Citadel.
He owns a home on the water in Miami.
He said bringing Carnegie Mellon to Miami puts the city at the heart of humanistic and scientific progress.
He is also joining the university's Board of Trustees.
