President Donald Trump said on Sunday that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an “energy ceasefire.”
He gave no details and said it started right away.
Moscow did not comment at once.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine welcomed the news.
He said it was good for everyone.
But he said Russia was still hitting energy sites in Kyiv and Kharkiv.
He said a power plant in Kharkiv was attacked that evening.
His office confirmed the attack came after Trump’s post.
Zelenskyy said Ukraine was ready to stop hitting Russian energy sites.
It would do this if Russia did the same.
Trump had made a similar claim on Sept. 14, and nothing came of it.
On Saturday, Trump said Ukraine needed a new president.
He blamed Zelenskyy for high U.S. diesel prices.
Zelenskyy replied that Ukraine could hold elections if Russia agreed to a 60-day ceasefire.
He said the choice of leader belongs to the Ukrainian people.
Ukraine has been under martial law since February 2022.
Its constitution bars elections during it.
Ukraine kept up its own strikes on Russian infrastructure.
A drone attack on Sunday shut down a Yandex data center in the city of Vladimir.
It was the third strike on Yandex sites in four days.
The outage disrupted taxis and banking for users in many Russian cities.
It also affected users in Kazakhstan, Belarus and Armenia.
In Zaporizhzhia, rescuers ended work after a Russian bombing Saturday.
Zelenskyy said 23 people were killed, including four children.
