Apple released iOS 27 last week.
The update is led by a more advanced Siri assistant, but it also adds many lesser-known features.
It works on devices going back to the iPhone 11 from 2019.
Apps load more quickly, among other improvements.
Some new features use Apple Intelligence, but only on newer devices like the iPhone 16 and iPhone 15 Pro models.
The new Siri AI app starts in beta, so users must join a waitlist in settings.
Its release in the European Union will be delayed over a dispute about the bloc's digital rules.
Apple added child safety features and redesigned its screen time controls.
Parents now get more detailed control over what kids can access.
A new setup process lets parents pick which apps kids can use and add more later.
A feature called Ask to Browse requires children to get permission before opening new websites in Safari.
It is on by default for children under 13, like the existing Ask to Buy setting.
Parents can approve requests in messages or on the child's device with their passcode.
This is easier than approving each website or banning them all.
The new screen time controls let parents schedule app use by category, such as entertainment, games or social media.
Parents can allow certain apps during a set time window, like before, during or after school.
They can also set weekday and weekend schedules.
Previously, they could only set general daily limits for downtime.
Parents can also suspend all device access, such as at dinner, or temporarily lift all restrictions.
Apple also expanded its Communications Safety feature, which blocked nudity in Messages and FaceTime.
It now blocks gore or violence too.
All devices must be updated to iOS 27 or its equivalents for these controls to work.
Safari can now watch webpages and alert users to changes.
Apple says Notify Me checks for updates such as price changes and item availability.
Users open the site, tap the three-line menu, and choose Notify Me.
There they set what to watch and how often to check.
A reporter testing it on a news site's AI section got alerts about new headlines.
However, it did not say which post was new.
Some users may wish it could check more often than hourly.
New AI photo editing tools can reframe a photo's perspective, remove distracting objects, or extend the background.
The reporter found reframing worked well, but extending produced odd results, including a fake house number.
