A racketeering conspiracy trial against Huawei Technologies began on Wednesday in New York, where federal prosecutors accused the Chinese technology company of a litany of offences, including stealing technology from American firms, abusing the United States financial system, and helping Iran spy on its citizens.

Huawei is the world's largest supplier of equipment for wireless telecommunications networks, but it is banned from selling equipment to American operators out of fear that it poses a security risk.

It has also been blacklisted by other Western allies, including Canada and the United Kingdom.

Taylor Stout, a lawyer for the Department of Justice, opened the government's case by telling the Brooklyn jury that Huawei had committed multiple crimes over two decades.

Defense attorney Brian Heberlig, however, dismissed those accusations, arguing that prosecutors were basing their case on a handful of anecdotes and on certain misconduct by a few of Huawei's roughly 200,000 employees across 170 countries, in order to portray the company and three of its subsidiaries as a criminal and corrupt corporation.

"There was no preconceived plan for the crime," stated Heberlig, who pointed out that the jurors must bear in mind that there were "real people whose careers and integrity are at stake in this case."

The first witness called by the prosecution was Parham Baheshti, who was raised in Iran but moved to the United States to study, a country whose citizenship he obtained in 2000.

Baheshti, who returned to Iran in 2003 to be closer to his wife's family, stated that he had leaked secrets to the US government about its dealings with Huawei, after becoming acquainted with the tech giant while working in 2009 for a small but fast-growing company that brought internet to remote corners of Iran.

Baheshti stated that he was enthusiastic about the idea of trying to bring internet access to small Iranian towns, but that he eventually became convinced that Huawei was not going to lend its assistance.

"They showed no signs of being worried about it," he said.

"They were pursuing their own interests."

"Perseguían sus propios intereses".

He described it as "outrageous" that, during a meeting with Huawei workers, he realized that the Chinese company was making a proposal "to analyze (Iranian) people and their online behavior".

Baheshti stated that he had left Iran in 2011, at which point he was informed that he was under investigation.

During his opening statement, Heberlig told the jurors that they would see through what he described as unreliable witnesses for the prosecution and would see that "the government's claims don't add up".

He also said that they would find that part of the testimony against the company was fueled by "old grudges".

He mocked the prosecutors' plans to present evidence in the courtroom that a Huawei employee had taken photos of a rival company's product at a trade fair event, saying that the government failed to mention that Huawei quickly fired the worker for the "foolish act."

It was not evidence of a "company-wide conspiracy," said Heberlig, who attributed Huawei's remarkable growth to its success in engineering, investment, innovation, and competition.

More recently, it has ventured into chip manufacturing, driven by the boom in artificial intelligence that is fuelling demand for microprocessors.

During President Donald Trump's first term, his administration raised national security concerns regarding Huawei and began pressuring Western allies to exclude the company's products from their next-generation high-speed wireless networks.

The United States announced the criminal charges in early 2019 and has since expanded the accusations.

Chinese officials stated that the United States has engaged in "economic harassment" and has improperly instrumentalized national security as a pretext to "suppress Chinese companies".
