Google has updated its mapping application to redesignate Lake Ontario as “Lake America” for users within the United States, a modification that, according to the global technology conglomerate, reflects a recent executive directive issued by President Donald Trump that altered the lake's nomenclature.

The Google Maps update arrives mere days after Trump’s executive order, unfolding against the backdrop of an escalating trade war with Canada that has impelled both nations to levy billions of dollars in reciprocal tariffs on each other’s exports.

This move mirrors Google’s 2025 action, when Trump issued a directive to redesignate the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America.

In a blog post published on Saturday, Google stated that its determination was predicated upon its established protocol of adhering to the nomenclature designated by the United States Geographic Names Information System, commonly referred to as GNIS.

“Individuals utilizing Maps within the United States will observe ‘Lake America,’ whereas those in Canada will continue to perceive ‘Lake Ontario,’ and users situated beyond both nations will encounter the dual nomenclature,” Google articulated in a succinct communiqué.

“These modifications align with our longstanding protocol governing hydronyms whose designations diverge across national boundaries, and the implementation is presently commencing.”

Trump’s Thursday decision to rename the lake elicited derision and apathy on both sides of the border.

By Saturday, Ontario Premier Doug Ford had countered the executive order with a billboard-scale proclamation emblazoned across the Canadian shoreline: “Lake Ontario. Now and forever.”

The White House, the office of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, and Ford's office abstained from proffering any immediate remarks on Sunday in response to Google's decision.

The internet conglomerate, headquartered in Mountain View, California, operates a preeminent search engine and a formidable digital advertising network, with its parent entity being Alphabet Inc.
