Kennedy Jr.'s "Make America Healthy Again" movement have lodged a formal protest against President Donald Trump's endorsement of coal to power the proliferation of artificial intelligence data centers, as articulated in a missive dispatched on Friday.

The letter, bearing the signatures of at least two former staffers from Kennedy’s 2024 presidential campaign, constitutes the inaugural significant mobilization of the MAHA movement concerning fossil fuels and represents the most recent in a succession of schisms between the heterogeneous coalition of activists and the Trump administration regarding environmental policy.

The letter to Trump, Kennedy, and sundry other Cabinet officials, initially procured by Reporters, decries a 2025 executive order designed to augment coal utilization in powering data centers despite pollution apprehensions, and urges the administration to contemplate renewable alternatives, encompassing solar and geothermal energy.

“We recognize the imperative of American primacy in artificial intelligence, national security, innovation, and economic prosperity,” the letter reads.

“Yet such leadership must not be purchased at the price of a more pernicious burden imposed upon America’s youth.”

In response, White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers observed that greenhouse gas emissions had fallen to a three-decade nadir during Trump’s initial tenure, asserting that Trump “was given a mandate to roll back the radical climate policies that are burning a hole through taxpayers’ wallets.”

The agencies to which the letter was directed have thus far refrained from proffering any immediate rejoinder to solicitations for commentary.

Prominent figures within the MAHA movement endorsing the letter include Zen Honeycutt, a former staffer on Kennedy’s campaign and founder of the advocacy organization Moms Across America, alongside Charles Eisenstein, who previously served as a speechwriter for Kennedy’s campaign.

Honeycutt stated that she had requested the Kennedy-aligned political action committee MAHA Action to endorse the letter but received no response.

In his capacity as health secretary, Kennedy has implemented a series of policy reforms aligned with the MAHA movement, notably endeavoring to curtail recommendations for childhood vaccinations—a paramount objective for certain activists.

Furthermore, he has pursued the elimination of artificial dyes from foodstuffs and urged Americans to adopt wholesome dietary practices devoid of ultraprocessed foods.

Yet many within the MAHA movement—whom Trump credits with securing his return to the White House two years ago—contend that they have become increasingly disenchanted with the administration's endorsement of agrochemicals such as glyphosate and its deregulatory environmental posture.

Several have intimated that they intend to cast their ballots on the basis of policy rather than party allegiance this autumn, thereby amplifying the political ramifications of their ever more conspicuous discord with the Republican-led executive.

In his capacity as president, Trump has fervently championed what he terms “big, beautiful coal,” notwithstanding the vehement objections of environmentalists concerning the planet-warming greenhouse gases and noxious chemicals emitted by coal-fired power plants.

His administration has moved to reverse the more stringent Biden-era standards governing greenhouse gas emissions, which, beyond their climatic ramifications, can impede neurodevelopment in children and elevate the incidence of myocardial infarction among adults.

He has likewise emerged as a vociferous proponent of data centers—the infrastructural backbone underpinning artificial intelligence and cloud computing—casting them as an indispensable lever in the contest to outpace China in the AI arms race.

“Were I the mayor of a municipality or the governor of a state, and I had the opportunity to attract a major industrial facility—an AI plant or a data center—I would unequivocally pursue it, given that the employment opportunities are immense, and the remuneration and tax revenues generated are nothing short of colossal,” Trump remarked this week.

Data centers have emerged as a contentious political flashpoint in the current electoral cycle, drawing censure from voters across the ideological spectrum for their role in inflating electricity tariffs, depleting water reserves, and generating deleterious levels of atmospheric and acoustic pollution.

The missive dispatched on Friday urges the administration to mandate transparent scrutiny of decisions pertaining to data center siting and power procurement, while also compelling adherence to extant environmental review protocols within the permitting framework.

Honeycutt recounted that, in the wake of Trump’s executive order the previous year, she undertook an investigation into the ramifications of coal ash on surrounding communities and was profoundly disquieted by her findings.

She further expressed apprehension regarding other facets of data centers, notably their extensive land consumption and the deleterious consequences they impose upon proximate residents.

“The data center expansion has exerted a profoundly deleterious influence on our communities, and a considerable contingent within the MAHA movement harbors profound disillusionment regarding this development,” she asserted.

“Our electoral support is reserved for those who prioritize health and safety above all else.”
