Elon Musk said that Tesla plans to start a robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, around June 22.
Musk said on his social media platform, X, that the date could change because Tesla is being very careful about safety.
Investors, Wall Street experts, and Tesla fans have been eagerly waiting for the self-driving taxi service since Musk announced earlier this year that it would start in Austin around June.
Last month, Musk told CNBC that the taxis would first be controlled from a distance and only work in specific, safe areas of the city. He also said he plans to start with about ten taxis, quickly add more, and then offer the service in cities like Los Angeles, San Antonio, and San Francisco.
For ten years, Musk has been promising that fully self-driving cars would be ready "next year." Now, he is under pressure because Tesla is actually starting a self-driving taxi service. Sales of Tesla's electric cars have also gone down because of more competition, changes to its most popular car, the Model Y, and the effects of Musk's involvement in politics.
The Austin launch happened after Musk had a public argument with President Trump about a tax law. Some experts are worried that Trump might try to get federal safety regulators to interfere if the robotaxis have any issues.
