Google's app for iPhones and iPads is getting a new feature called "Simplify." This feature uses AI to make difficult or technical writing on the internet easier to understand, and you don't have to leave the page.
Simplify uses a method from Google Research that makes prompts better. It uses Gemini to make hard text easier to understand, but it still keeps the important details. Google tested this and found that the easier text helped people understand and remember the original information better.
Google likely wants people to keep using its tools and services for difficult subjects by having a feature like Simplify, instead of using popular tools from other companies like OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
To use Simplify, choose any text on a website you are looking at in the Google app, and then click the "Simplify" button that appears. You will then see the text in an easier form, which will help you understand the information and continue reading.
Google's research blog shows an example of what this feature could look like. For example, you might read a part that says: "This is a complicated lung condition. It harms the lung tissue, changes the lung's immune cells, increases substances that affect the immune system, and greatly changes the blood vessels in the lungs."
This is a complex lung problem that damages the lung tissue in two main ways. One way is emphysema, which harms the small air sacs in the lungs. The other way is fibrosis, which causes a lot of scarring in the lung tissue. The immune cells in the lungs also change, and the body makes more substances that help control the immune system. The blood vessels in the lungs also change a lot.
Google explains that the purpose of this feature is to help people understand difficult subjects they find when learning online.
Google said in a blog post, "We want our models to rewrite difficult ideas correctly. They should not add mistakes or miss important points." They added, "The new text should help people understand difficult information, but it must still be true to the original message."
Simplify is becoming available to people using iOS this week.
