Elon Musk has indicated a provisional launch date of June 22nd for Tesla's robotaxi service in Austin, Texas.
In a post on his X social media platform, Musk stated that the planned date might change because Tesla is being extremely careful about safety.
Investors, Wall Street analysts, and Tesla fans have been eagerly awaiting the introduction of Tesla's self-driving taxi service since Musk stated earlier this year that it would begin in Austin sometime in June.
In a recent interview with CNBC, Musk shared his plans for the robotaxis. He explained that at first, they would be watched remotely and kept within specific, safe areas of the city. He expected to start with about ten taxis, then quickly add more, and eventually offer the service in cities like Los Angeles, San Antonio, and San Francisco.
For the past ten years, Musk has always promised that fully self-driving cars would be available "next year." However, the pressure is now much greater because Tesla is actually starting a self-driving taxi service. Sales of Tesla's electric cars have gone down because of more competition, the redesign of its most popular car, the Model Y, and the negative effects of Musk's involvement in politics.
The Austin launch happened after Musk had a very public disagreement with President Trump about the government's tax law. This has led some analysts to worry that Trump might get back at him by encouraging federal safety regulators to get involved if there are any problems with the robotaxis.
